Example 1:

Rohith was four times as old as his son eight years ago.

After eight years, Rohith will be twice as old as his son. What are their present ages?

Solution:

Let sons age eight years ago be x.

Rohith’s age was eight years ago is 4x.

Sons age after eight years is x+8+8

= x + 16

Rohit’s age after eight years is 4x + 16

2(x+16) = 4x+16

x = 8

son age = x+8 = 16

Rohit age = 4x+8 = 40

Example 2:

Abhay’s age after six years will be 3/7th of his father’s age.

Ten years ago, the ratio of their ages was 1: 5

What is Abhay’s father’s age today?

Solution:

The ratio of Abhay and their father’s age ten years ago is x: 5x

Abhay age after six years = (x+10) + 6

Father age after six years = (5x + 10) +6

x+16 = 3/7(5x+16)

8x = 64

x = 8

Father present age = 5x+10 = 50
