Example 1:
A father said to his son, “I was as old as you are at present at the time of your birth”.
If the father’s age is 38 years now, then the son’s age is five years back.
Solution:
The below diagram shows the approach to solving the question.
Take the father, age 38 years.
The son was born in the line drawn for the father’s age.
Mark the point where the son was born and the age of the father at the time of the son’s birth is x
From the graph, we understand 38-x = x
x = 19
The sons age 5 years before = 19-5 = 14 years.
Example 2:
In ten years, A will be twice as old as B was ten years ago.
Suppose A is nine years older than B. Then the present age of B?
Solution:
Let B’s present age is x
A’s present age = x+9
(x+9)+10 = 2(x-10)
x+19 = 2x -20
x = 39
Example 3:
Sneha’s age is one-sixth of her father’s age.
Sneha’s father will be twice Vimala’s age after ten years.
If Vimala’s 8th birthday was celebrated two years ago, what is Sneha’s present age?
Solution:
Vimala’s age = 8+2 = 10 years
vimala’s age after ten years = 10+10 = 20
Sneha’s father’s age after ten years = 2*20 = 40
Sneha’s father’s age now = 40 -10 = 30.
Sneha’s age now = (1/6)*30
= 5 years
