Example 1:
In an election between two candidates, 75% of the voters cast their votes. Out of which 2% of the votes are invalid.
A candidate got 9261 votes which was 75% of the valid votes.
Find the number of votes enrolled in the election.
Solution:
Let the number of votes enrolled = x.
Number of votes cast = 75% of x = (75/100)*x
Valid votes = 98% of 75x/100
= (98/100)*(75x/100)
75% of valid votes = 9261
75/100((98/100)*(75x/100))
x= 16800
Example 2:
Mr. James gave 50 percent of the money he had to his wife.
He also gave 20 percent of the remaining amount to each of his sons.
Half of the amount now left was spent on miscellaneous items.
The amount of 12000 remaining is deposited in the bank.
How much money did James initially have?
Solution:
Let the initial amount = x
40% given to the wife
= 40/100*x
Remaining amount = (x – 40x/100)
= 3x/5
Money given to 3 sons = 3 *((20/100)*(3x/5))
= 9x/25
Balance 3x/5 – 9x/25 = 6x/25
1/2(6x/25) = 12000
x = 100000
