Ratio: The relationship between two groups or amounts
Example: The ratio of men to women in a class is 10: 1
For every ten men, one woman is present in the class.
The ratio is expressed as 10: 1 or 10/1
Expressed in quotients = 10/1
Equal quotients mean the same ratio.
10: 1 = 20:2 Multiply or divide the ratio values with any number that will not affect the ratio.
10/1 = 20/2 = 10 equal ratios same quotient.
Example 1:
Divide 672 grams in the ratio of 5:3
Solution:
5+3 = 8, so divide 672 grams into eight equal parts.
Five parts are given to one person, and three are given to another.
From mathematical equation
672 * 5/8 = 420 grams
672 * 3/8 = 252 grams
Example 2:
Divide Rs 1162 among A, B, and C in the ratio 35: 28: 20.
Solution:
35 + 28 + 20 = 83
A’s amount = 1162 * 35/83 = 490
B’s amount = 1162 * 28/83 = 392
C’s amount = 1162 * 20/83 = 280
