Example 1:

Paul spends 75% of his income. His income is increased by 20%.

He increased his expenditure by 10%. Find the percentage increase in savings.

Solution:

Let income = 100 Rs.

Expenditure = 75

Savings = 25

New income = 120

New expenditure = 75 + 10% of 75 or 110% of 75

= (110/100)*75

= 82.5

New Savings = 120 – 82.5

= 37.5

Increase in savings = 37.5 – 25 = 12.5

Percentage increase in savings = (12.5/25) * 100 = 50%

Example 2:

When the price of a product decreased by 10%, The number sold increased by 30%.

What was the percentage effect on revenue?

Solution:

The price of the product = 100

Let sale = 100 pieces

Revenue = 100 * 100 = 10000

New revenue = 90 * 130

= 11700

Percentage increase in revenue = (1700/10000) * 100 = 17%
