Examples of Ratios 3
In this class, We discuss Examples of Ratios 3.
The reader should have the basics of ratios. Click here.
Example 1:
A, B, and C salaries are in the ratio 2: 3: 5.
What will be the ratios if increments of 15%, 10%, and 20% are made?
Solution:
A = 2k
B = 3k
C = 5K
A’s new salary = (115/100)* 2k = 23k/10
B’s new salary = (110/100)* 3k = 33k/10
C’s new salary = (120/100)* 5k = 6k
new ratios are
23k/10: 33k/10: 6k
23: 33: 60
Example 2:
A sum of Rs 1300 is divided among P, Q, R, and S.
P’s share/ Q’s share = Q’s share/ R’s share = R’s share/ S’s share = 2/3
The P’s share =?
Solution:
Let P’s share = 2x and Q’s share = 3x
Q/R = 2/3
R= (3/2)Q = 9x/2
R/S = 2/3
S = (3/2)R = 27x/4
P + Q + R + S = 1300
2x + 3x + 9x/2 +27x/4 = 1300
x = 5200/65 = 80
P’s share = 2*80 = 160
Example 3:
Gold is 19 times as heavy as water, and copper is nine times as heavy as water.
In what ratio should the metals be mixed to get an alloy 15 times as heavy as water?
Solution:
One gram of gold mixed with x grams of copper.
1 gram of gold + x grams of copper = (x+ 1) grams of alloy.
19 + 9x = (x+ 1)15
6x = 4
x = 4/6
x = 2/3
1: x = 1: 2/3
= 3: 2
