Example 1:

Rajeev’s age after fifteen years will be five times his age five years back.

What is the present age of Rajeev?

Solution:

Let Rajeev’s present age is x.

(x+15) = 5(x-5)

x+ 15 = 5x – 25

x = 10

Example 2:

The ages of the two persons differ by 16 years.

If six years ago the age of the elder one was three times as old as, the younger one, find their present ages.

Solution:

Let the age of the younger person is x.

Choosing a younger person as x will get the equation in multiples and additions.

Choosing an older person as x will get the equation in divisions.

Solving divisions is difficult. So choose the x to make the equation in multiples and additions.

The age of the elder one is x+16. Because the ages differ by 16.

3(x-6) = (x+16-6)

2x = 28

x = 14

x+16 = 30

The ages are 16 and 30.

Example 3:

The father’s present age is three years more than three times the son’s age.

Three years hence, the father’s age will be ten years more than twice the son’s age.

Find the present age of the father.

Solution:

Let the son’s present age is x.

Father’s present age is 3x + 3

(3x + 3 + 3) = 2(x+3) +10

x = 10

Father present age = 3x + 3 = 33
