Example 1:
108÷36 of 1/4 + 2/5 * 13/4
In BODMAS rules, we have to evaluate ‘of’ first
36 of 1/4 = 36 * 1/4 = 9
108÷9 + 2/5 * 13/4
The first division, then multiplication
12 + 13/10
= 133/10
Example 2:
9 – 1 2/9 of 36/11 ÷ 5 1/7 of 7/9 =?
After changing the values 1 2/9 and 5 1/7, we get 9 – 11/9 of 36/11 ÷ 39/7 of 7/9
‘of’ should be evaluated
11/9 of 36/11 = 11/9 * 36/11 = 4
39/7 of 7/9 = 4
9 – 4 ÷ 4
= 9-1
=8
Example 3:
4/15 of 5/7 of a number is greater than 4/9 of 2/5 of the same number by 8.
What is half of that number?
Solution:
let the number be x
4/15 of 5/7 of x is our first number
4/9 of 2/5 of x is our second number
From statement (4/15 of 5/7 of x) – (4/9 of 2/5 of x) = 8
(4/15 * 5/7 * x) – (4/9 * 2/5 * x) = 8
4x/21 – 8x/45 = 8
x[4/21 – 8/45] =8
x = 630
x/2 = 315
