Example 1:

What mathematical operation should come in place of ‘?’

2 ? 6 – 12 ÷ 4 + 2 = 11

a) + b) – c) * d) ÷

Solution:

From the rules of expression, the division first

2 ? 6 – 3 + 2 = 11

2 ? 6 = 11 + 3 – 2

2 ? 6 = 12

Replace ? with multiplication

Try to solve the example based on the rules and the operators provided in the answers.

Example 2:

45 – [ 28 – { 37 – (15 – *)}] = 58

The value of * =?

a) -29 b) -19 c) 19 d) 29

Solution:

First, solve the expression in ()

45 – [ 28 – { 37 – 15 + *}] = 58

45 – [ 28 – { 22 + *}] = 58

Now, evaluate the expression in {}

45 – [ 28 – 22 – *] = 58

45 – [ 6 – *] = 58

45 – 6 + * = 58

39 + * = 58

we get * = 19
