In aptitude, we have to follow some conditions to evaluate the expressions.

BODMAS Rules

B – Brackets should be evaluated first

Brackets are evaluated in the order (), {}, [ ].

O – of, We discuss of in the next class

D – Division

M- Multiplication

A – Addition

S – Subtraction

In expression evaluation, we follow the above order.

Virnaculum or Bar:

When an expression contains virnaculum, Before applying BODMAS, evaluate the expression under virnaculum or bar.

Example 1:

5005 – 5000 / 10

The expression had subtraction and division symbols

First we evaluate division 5000/10 = 500

5005 – 500

Now we do subtraction

5005 – 500 = 4505

Example 2: Important

18800 / 470 / 20

In the expression, we have two division symbols.

If we have the same symbols, we evaluate from left to right.

Example: 16 – 8 -2

16- 8 must be evaluated first.

16 – 8 = 8

8 -2 is evaluated next.

8-2 = 6

If we do right to left, we will get a different answer

8-2 = 6

16-6 = 10

In our example, we do 18800 / 470 is evaluated first

18800 / 470 = 40

40/20 = 2

Final answer = 2

Example 3:

Virnaculum example:

The below diagram shows the example and its evaluation.
