Example 1:

How many minutes does Aditi take to cover a distance of 400 meters if she runs at a speed of 20 kilometres per hour?

Solution:

We should convert 20 kmph to meters per second.

The distance is in meters.

Multiply by 5/18 to convert kilometers per hour to meters per second.

20 * 5 / 18

= 50/9 m/sec

Time = Distance / Speed = 400/(50/9)

t = 72 sec

t = 1 12/60 minute.

t = 1 1/5 min.

Example 2:

A cyclist covers a distance of 750 meters in 2min 30 sec.

What is the speed in kilometres per hour?

Solution:

Speed = distance / time = 750/150 = 5 m/sec

2min 30 sec = 150 seconds.

To convert meters per second to kilometers per hour we multiply by 18/5.

5 * 18/5

s = 18 kmph.
