We will try to understand Data Link Layer Node to Node Communication in this class.
We have already explained the concepts of the data link layer in our previous classes.
Data Link Layer Node to Node Communication
Let’s try to understand the why data link layer is called node to node communication.
To understand this consider the image below.
In the above image, system A wants to transfer data to system B on another network.
A’s network is Ethernet on bus topology, and B’s is the token ring technology on ring topology.
The networks are different, so the frames and the frame fields are different.
The data that must be transferred is attached to the frame in the data link layer.
The frame has to be transferred to the node outside the network.
The frame will be transferred to the default router of the network.
At the default router, the frame of the old network will be decapsulated, and the ‘frame’ of the new network will be encapsulated.
As the data frame is changed at every node, the communication of the data link layer is called node to node communication.
