In this class, we will discuss the Names of the Protocol Data Unit PDU.

In our previous class, we discussed the concepts of IP addressing and the fields in the first row of the IPv4 header.

A protocol data unit (PDU) is a group of information added by each layer.

We know that we have five layers in the practical implementation of the OSI architecture.

In each layer, we have the names for their representations.

The image below shows the layers and the names of data units in each layer.

The application layer receives the original message that the sender transmits.

The name of the data unit in the application layer is a message.

The name of the data unit in the transport layer is a segment.

The name of the data unit in the network layer is a packet.

The name of the data unit in the data link layer is a frame.

The name of the data unit in the physical layer is raw bits.

The data unit received from its upper will get encapsulated in the header of its layer.
