Example on Subnetting and Subnet Masking

The image below shows the subnetting of the university network.

The subnet mask for the above network is 255.255.255.192.

Consider the packets with the following destination IP addresses.

  1. 194.24.2.70
  2. 194.24.2.130
  3. 194.24.2.200

From the above image, we can clearly say the network IDs to which the destination IP addresses belong are networks 2, 3, and 4.

Finding Network ID’s

The images below show the transparent way of ANDing the subnet mask and the destination IP address to get the subnet ID of each subnet to which the destination is connected.
