In this class, we will try to understand the concept of Maximum Transmission Unit MTU.
We have already discussed the concepts of IP addresses in our previous classes.
Maximum Transmission Unit MTU
It defines the largest packet size that can be transmitted as a single entity in a network connection.
To understand this concept, we will consider the image shown below.
In our previous classes on the IPv4 header field total length, we have discussed that the maximum size of the packet is 65536 Bytes.
In the data link layer, we have discussed that the maximum capacity of the ethernet is 1500 Bytes only.
In the above diagram, we have a simple network with ethernet with bus topology and token ring with ring topology.
The ethernet capacity is 1500 Bytes, and the token ring has 512 Bytes capacity.
In an Ethernet network, the Maximum Transmission Unit is 1500 Bytes only.
How the network layer of 65536 capacity will be converted to 1500 bytes?
This we will discuss in our next class on Segmentation and Fragmentation.
