In this class, we will try to understand What is Subnetting in Computer Networks?
We have already discussed the concept of classful addressing in our previous class.
What is Subnetting in Computer Networks
Subnetting is dividing a single ‘large’ network into multiple smaller networks.
Even though we have different classes, we need subnetting to utilize IP addresses efficiently.
To understand this consider the image below.
We have four departments in the above image: CSE, ECE, MECH, and CIVIL.
We want to construct labs for those departments with 60 hosts each.
In practice, we face different challenges to constructing a network.
Different LAN technologies may require the transmission of data by the hosts in the network.
The labs may be located in different locations scattered across the university. The LANs may not support such long distances.
It is difficult to address maintenance and security issues associated with larger networks.
All these difficulties are addressed by subnetting.
