In this class, we will have Understanding the Definition of Data and Database.

This class is the first class of our course, Database Management Systems DBMS.

Data: Data means the Known facts that we can record.

Let’s try to understand this definition by using an example.

If we want to save the phone number of a friend on the mobile contact list, then what are the facts about the friend that we will save.

We will save the name of the friend, phone number, address, and e-mail address.

All the above details are the facts of the friend at can be recorded.

Database: A database is a collection of related data.

The essential point to understand here is related data.

We will try to understand the definition of database by using the analogy of phone-book.

Phone-book is the collection of the fact of the friends and the family numbers.

Generally in a phone book we will store the name, phone number, address, and e-mail address.

The above details are related data.

But collecting the names of the pet dog is not related to the contest of phone-book.

The collection of such related details of all the friends and family is called a database.
